Life as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

AME is both challenging and adventurous at the same time. If you are also attracted to the field, here is some insight on the life you probably would be having as an aircraft maintenance engineer.

Working in the aerospace industry at any stage and at any point of time, understand that you form a part of one of the very important projects ever undertaken. Every single task that is performed in aircraft maintenanceengineering affects the lives of thousands of people who are going to board the plane.

Working hours:
While working as an aircraft maintenance engineer, one has to have the patience to survive long hours of work. There has to be an element of dedication, hard work and willingness to work. The scope in this industry is as good as any other. It is highly competitive and if you wish to remain in the rat race, you will have to work hard and there is also possibility that you during your career have to acquire further education and work on yourself.

The responsibility you are carrying on your shoulders:
The responsibility on your shoulders is huge. You are expected to be available at any point of time during the day and night if there is an emergency. No season is an off season, you are expected to work at all times. Most of all, if any problem arises at all, you are required to fix it in as short a time as possible. You might have to multitask and finish a number of things in limited time too. Remember, the work is technical and serious to the level that the lives of a huge number of people are involved. So if anything goes wrong, you will be on the hook.

The pay scale is said to be enough to sustain you. This is an area where maximum effort is put into effectiveness and efficiency in terms of cost, so it is tried that they are kept as low as possible. Due to this reason the salaries in this area are not very high. But if you are a person who is utterly passionate about engineering and about aircrafts, you couldn’t have found for yourself a better field to work in.

The pros:
The good side of the coin is that you get to travel around the world several times and that too free of cost. Most people would kill to get a life like that. It is a profession where you are going to have to sweat but in the end be satisfied that the plane that those several people with their little children are going to board is safe and will have them landed safely to their loved ones.

Since the demand of Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is only rising, the situation is only set to improve. Companies out there and the governments all around the world are trying to bring the rates down indefinitely but the contentment of working as an AME could not be affected by any actions of any person.

It goes unsaid that the job is hectic and will squeeze the light out of you but it’s an everyday challenge. Aircraft maintenance engineering is a challenge to keep all kinds of equipment in the plane air worthy and safe.

Procedure for the Admission for Aeronautical Engineering

Before getting admission in any of the aeronautical engineering institutes it is very necessary that you have proper understanding of the admission process. This article talks about the admission for aeronautical engineering.

Aeronautic Engineering is a very popular branch in engineering studies. This particular branch of study includes the space aviation and defence.  Aerospace engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the research, design process, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft.  Its need and research into this field is growing at a very fast pace all across the globe. As it is a growing field so more and more students are taking interest in Aeronautic Engineering as it also has good career scope. As the aviation industry is growing across the globe so is the line of aeronautic engineering. The candidates who have successfully completed their higher secondary education can join this bachelor’s degree course in aeronautical studies. There are many universities across the globe which offer studies an option to take up aeronautic engineering. Aeronautic engineering is a four years course. There are not many collages which have aeronautic engineering as a course for the students. Even a big country as United States of America has only ten collages which have an aeronautic engineering course. The students who wish to take up aeronautic engineering in countries like USA, England, Australia, Canada and other developed countries have to meet a certain eligibility criteria set by most collages which all collages follow and provide admissions based upon the results of the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria for the admission foraeronautical engineering consist of:
  • The score/ Percentage/ GPA of 10+2
  • ACT or SAT reasoning test score
  • SAT subject test score
  • TOEFEL score
  • Essay/s writing skills

The GPA is the score of the student which he/she scores in his/her 10+2 final exams. The other requirement is SAT. SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test or Scholastic Assessment Test .The SAT is a standardized test use for collage admissions. Then the scores of TOEFEL are taken into consideration. TOEFEL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language.

India is a country which is producing many engineers. There are many collages for aeronautic engineering in India due to which many students are coming to India to study. The aspirants who wish to take aeronautic engineering have to take part in entrance exams. This will be organized in National level or by the concerned state universities.

AIEE is an entrance exam conducted National level for admission of students in various engineering colleges in the country. IIT JEE, KEAM, JNU EEE, VITEEE, GCET, etc. are the other entrance examinations in India carried out for the engineering admissions. There is an eligibility criteria for students to appear in the entrance test.

The eligibility criteria is as stated below

  • The candidates who have completed 10+2 or equivalent with their subjects as Physics,
  • Mathematics and Chemistry or Physics, Chemistry, Biology can apply for entrance tests
  • The secondary education obtained by the candidate should be from a reputed institute and a minimum percentage of 60% is required in 10+2 exams for most collages entrance test
  • The appearing candidate is eligible only if he/she submits the qualifying certificates during the time of admission
  • Candidates in the age group between 17 & 25 years are only eligible to apply. Five years relaxations will be given to the deprived candidates. Today many students to prepare for the entrance test take coaching classes so that they can be prepared for the entrance test. Different coaching classes prepares students for 10+2 exams or for IIT JEE or SAT or TOEFEL depending on the admission for aeronautical engineering.
